NOTE: In order to achieve an optimal experience with bilateral stimulation, it is recommended to use headphones and view on a computer screen (standard width) for optimal audio and visual tracking of the leaf which appears at 1:18.

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) is a technique often used in EMDR therapy and mindfulness practices to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and help reset the nervous system. After a short introduction, you will notice a focal point appears and moves from side-to-side (bilaterally) and each set of BLS is approximately 2.5 minutes long. The rhythmic, alternating stimulation of the left and right sides of the body combines visual and auditory modalities of bilateral self-regulation. If you prefer to engage in tactile bilateral stimulation while watching this video, try using the Butterfly Hug technique as the leaf bounces back and forth. If that sounds right for you, check out this resource for information on the Butterfly Hug: https://youtu.be/H9Hnisaqlns
Bilateral stimulation helps activate both hemispheres of the brain, promoting nervous system regulation by engaging the parasympathetic system. The goal is to create a calming rhythm that encourages relaxation while maintaining gentle engagement. You can pace yourself on the duration of this exercise and pause whenever needed. Engaging with the full 30-minute video is not necessary, but you may choose to engage in a longer practice to help create a powerful experience of self-mastery. With the assistance of this tool for stress relief, you may achieve nervous system balancing and self-regulation of emotional processing.
The drumbeat was created with a buffalo hide drum that was gifted to me by a Lakota elder. The video was filmed when I visited the Nosara region of Costa Rica.
